The key is that no part of the principal is ever spent--only a portion of interest income is used to fund programs. The remaining income is reinvested to increase the value of the endowment fund. Sound complicated? It’s not, really. Consider this example: A couple establishes an endowment of $10,000.00 to benefit Lancaster Catholic High School. That money is invested with the Diocese of Harrisburg (all LCHS endowment funds are managed by the Diocese) and at the end of the year, 4% is allocated for use by the high school. That means Catholic High receives $400.00! If, during the course of that year the fund earned 10% the remaining 6%, or $600, would be reinvested in the fund which has now grown to $10,600! Every year, the principal grows, and thus, so does the allocation to Catholic High. That’s what makes endowment so wonderful! An endowed gift will last forever, continually growing, and will make a larger and more significant difference every year for as long as Catholic High exists. With the magic of compounding interest, the annual disbursements to LCHS, over time, will far exceed the initial investment. Endowed gifts can be unrestricted or designated for a number of purposes, including financial assistance for deserving students. Gifts of $5,000.00 or more can be named as honor or memorial scholarships and can be designated according to the donor’s wishes. Gifts of endowment for the benefit of Lancaster Catholic High School will be managed through the Bishop’s FOCUS (Foundations of Catholic United In Service) Program at the Diocese of Harrisburg.
