Summer School Offerings
There are two distinct reasons why a student will take a class in the summer: due to failure of a class during the school year (these are known as recovery courses) or because a student wishes to move ahead in a particular subject (these are known as accelerated courses).

The LCHS online provider is Educere. All information regarding summer school is on the proceeding pages, however, we advise students to speak with their School Counselor regarding any classes to be taken. Lancaster Catholic reserves the right to approve any classes taken outside the building where students wish to receive high school credit. Please be advised that any approved courses students take outside of Lancaster Catholic High School will be awarded transfer credit, however, the final grade will not be factored into a student’s grade point average.

Finish Strong
We’ve all been there, feeling like summer will never get here and not feeling like schoolwork is important. Perseverance and grit are two qualities that employers and college admissions professionals look for when evaluating students. Encouraging your child(ren) to work hard to boost their GPA and power through these upcoming weeks is essential to their success and provides lifelong habits that pay off. A job well done will make summer that much more enjoyable!

FAFSA Appeals
We received some very good information regarding appeal letters for requesting additional financial aid. While the FAFSA woes continue, if your student’s original financial aid package came back on the low side, they may request that their school of choice take a second look by visiting goingmerry.com and/or reading the Six Tips for Financial Aid Appeals flyer attached to this edition of Crusader Connections.
What About Sophomores?
The School Counselors will be meeting with sophomores as the fourth quarter of the school year gets underway. We hope to share with them some ideas about academic progress, leadership opportunities and summer activities. Additionally, we will be visiting classrooms in the upcoming weeks to ascertain course selections for the 2024-25 Academic Year.

Third Quarter Ending!
We have now reached that time of the year when summer is just around the corner. Report cards for Quarter 3 will be coming out soon and while most students are continuing to make progress, some students may be anticipating recovering a credit or more in summer school. Lancaster Catholic uses Educere as our online vendor for summer credit recovery as well as accelerated classes. More information about summer school offerings will be available by April 15, 2024.

Summer Jobs, Working Papers, Insurance Discounts

Does Social Media Use Cause Depression?
As a follow up to our Non-Digital Day last week, the Child Mind Institute recently published an article written by Caroline Miller in conjunction with clinical experts Jerry Bubrick, PhD and Alexandra Hamlet, PsyD, about how social media may be negatively affecting kids. In the article they stated, evidence is mounting that there is a link between social media and depression. In several studies, teenage and young adult users who spend the most time on Instagram, Facebook and other platforms were shown to have a substantially (from 13 to 66 percent) higher rate of reported depression than those who spent the least time. Smartphones were introduced in 2007, and by 2015, approximately 92% of teens and young adults owned a smartphone. The rise in depressive symptoms amongst teens correlates with the smartphone adoption during this period of time. The article goes on to suggest that parents can do their part to minimize the negative effects of social media use, & So it’s smart for parents to check in regularly with kids about their social media use, to make sure it’s positive and healthy, and guide them towards ways to change it, if you think it’s not. For the full article, please see childmind.org or click on any of the underlined words and you will find more information.

The "soft launch" for new the FAFSA form at the end of December has had its technical issues. A free webinar is coming up hosted by Sallie Mae on January 10, 2024, from 7:00-8:00 p.m. Register here!
